The Land Of Wandering Souls 2000
Plot Synopsis
In 1999, Southeast Asia's first fiber-optic cable was laid across Cambodia, stretching from one border of the war-torn country to the other. The difficult project provided low-paying jobs for the impoverished locals, and Rithy Panh and his documentary crew followed the workers for four months as they dug trenches through miles of ruined earth - and through history, collective memory, rusting instruments of war and forgotten human remains. An uncommonly dignified act of witness, The Land Of Wandering Souls captures the strength, wit and humanity of the Cambodian people, as well as the social and economic contradictions facing a long-suffering nation as it enters the modern age.
